Doctoral Studies

Research and doctoral studies are at the core of the Université de Lyon’s identity and one of our top missions.

The PhD (doctorat in French) represents a professional research experience culminating in the presentation of a thesis that allows, in three years' time, to earn the highest level of qualification available in France: the PhD.

1 PhD degree pursued in one of the Université de Lyon's 9 accredited higher education institutions. Since 2016, all theses are registered under the "Université de Lyon" banner.
17 Doctoral Schools covering all fields of research
The Doctoral Schools, accredited by the French Ministry of Higher Education and Research, supervise and train students during the three years of their doctoral studies. The Doctoral Schools recruit students who hold a Master's degree (or equivalent) on the basis of their scientific excellence, motivation and academic merit.

The Doctoral Studies department: our missions

  • To coordinate of the 17 Doctoral Schools
  • To offer PhD students cross-disciplinary professional training, to acquire the skills required by managers and project leaders
  • To manage the Université de Lyon’s Doctor-Consultant program and organize and support immersion and work-placement programs that take place during or after the PhD
  • To collect and communicate information on thesis funding and on scientific calls for tenders
  • To facilitate access to job offers for PhD graduates, and strenghten their entrepreneuship skills
  • To provide support for PhD student associations whose goal is to establish links with the socio-economic sector (organization of meetings between PhD students and companies, etc.)
  • To collect and centralize information on employment opportunities for PhDs
  • To develop an information system to collect and update all pertinent information concerning PhD students and their research activity, in collaboration with the doctoral schools and institutions. The Doctoral Studies department uses all these collected data in the PhD Student Guide.
